O nome Coldplay surgiu apenas em 1998, antes a banda teve outros dois nomes: Pectoralz e Starfish. No ano de 1999 os garotos lançaram seu primeiro EP em uma grande gravadora (terceiro da carreira) - o The Blue Room. A fama mundial veio com o lançamento do single Yellow em 2000 seguido do lançamento do primeiro álbum, Parachutes. O segundo álbum foi lançado em 2002 - A Rush of Blood to the Head que, sob muitas críticas positivas, foi indicado a vários prêmios. O terceiro, X&Y, veio em 2005 e foi recebido por opiniões diversificadas da crítica. Entretanto, o quarto álbum lançado em 2008 - Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends - trouxe muitos comentários favoráveis e indicações ao Grammy.
